Brexit Expert Visits New Zealand

Press Release – NZ Institute of International Affairs

One of Britains leading commentators on Brexit and British politics will be in New Zealand at the end of January to talk about what Brexit means for the UK and for New Zealand.

One of Britain’s leading commentators on Brexit and British politics will be in New Zealand at the end of January to talk about what Brexit means for the UK and for New Zealand.

Professor Richard Whitman is Professor of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent. While in New Zealand he will be a guest lecturer at the National Centre for Research on Europe at Canterbury University and is due to give two public talks, one in Wellington (29th Jan) hosted by the NZ Institute of International Affairs and the other in Auckland (31st Jan) hosted by the Institute in collaboration with the Auckland Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

President of the Institute, Sir Anand Satyanand says “We are very lucky to have Professor Whitman coming to New Zealand and providing some valuable insights into the implications of Brexit for New Zealand. Our trading and political ties are significant and it will be important to unravel this complicated process and its effects both inside and outside of Britain.”

Negotiating the Brexit plan and deal has been a major preoccupation for the UK over the last two years and it isn’t over yet. It has caused major political dislocation in the UK and divided the government, parliament, political parties and the public. Brexit is a major point of departure for the UK and will have implications for its place in the world and its diplomatic and trade partners. On the eve of the UK’s departure from the EU Professor Whitman will untangle the intricacies of the Brexit process, look at the state of play in the UK’s relationship with the EU and offer an assessment of the impact for New Zealand.
