Ngāruahine is completely opposed to TTR iron sands mining.

Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust made submissions to the EPA process which you can read and appeared at the EPA hearing which you can listen to on the links included below– that expressed with a clear technical and tikanga position our opposition to TTR’s application.

Like Ngaa Rauru we fully support our whanaunga Ngāti Ruanui in protecting their interests and likewise we will continue to fight to protect Ngāruahine’s interests, particularly those of our hapū whose traditional territories are impacted by the proposed consent area. The entire South Taranaki community was devastated by the contentious split decision of the DMC with the two dissenting opinions confirming our worst fears.

Te Korowai o Ngāruahine has explored a number of options, taken external legal advice, and has decided not to launch a separate appeal against the decision by the EPA to grant TTR a consent. As a Board we have carefully considered this decision and feel that supporting other appeals is in the best interests of Ngāruahine and more likely to add strength to the existing appeals.

Pou Whakarae Will Edwards states “How as iwi we each protect our own interests and support our whanaunga in their opposition to a consent is a matter between iwi. There is a lot of shared whakapapa between us and we are one people of the Aotea waka. I proudly say that Ngāruahine stands strongly beside Ngaa Rauru and Ngāti Ruanui opposition to Seabed mining as are the other applicants who opposed the application.”

“For too long large corporates have taken monetary gains out of this region while damaging the environment leaving us with a hollowed-out resource base. – Iwi, alongside the rest of the South Taranaki Community, are prepared to fight. We will utilise different strategies at different points at different times, not all of these are played out on Facebook, in court, or in front of cameras. But make no mistake we stand united to protect our environment, for our people and for future generations.”
