From electricity to multi-utility: Simply Group expands services

Simply Group has created a bespoke prototype billing system for one of the country’s largest gas networks, marking a milestone in the company’s evolution into the multi-utility space.

The company partnered up with First Gas Limited following its purchase of Vector Gas Limited’s gas distribution assets, which came without supporting IT infrastructure and established systems.

Within three months, Simply Group developed an agile auditable, compliant, fully functioning billing system. Simply Group Commercial Director Murray Dyer says with everybody at First Gas learning the process themselves, Simply Group had to work iteratively as opposed to from a full list of requirements.

“First Gas wanted to be able to operate as an independent business and ensure accurate billing and compliance. Simply Group was able to lean on its experience, intellectual property and white label utility billing system to determine the business rules and put together a compliant system.”

“Axos Systems’ specialisation in IT systems for the energy and utility sector brought real agility and speed to market, which was key to succeeding in this project. With a number of other IT projects running parallel to the gas billing system, First Gas needed to be sure that Simply Group would get on with the job.

“With limited existing infrastructure and no systems or processes for gas reconciliation and billing functions, Simply Group and Axos Systems developed a solution from the previous owner’s invoices, and worked backwards, essentially figuring out an accurate billing process from their expertise in billing and tariff structures.”

First Gas Distribution Commercial Manager Matt Wilson says the ability to bill is an inherent part of all businesses and First Gas required a fully functional, auditable, viable billing system that was completely compliant in a very short space of time.

“Simply Group were open and collaborative throughout the process and were willing to think and work outside the box.

“We’re now looking at where else we can utilise Simply Group’s services, because they’re a company that is willing to look at a problem a bit differently. Their willingness to work within our requirements from the start is what sets them apart.”

The partnership and successful outcome with First Gas constitutes a milestone for Simply Group, as the company successfully moves beyond electricity to multiutility services.
