New Chairman for Waikato-Tainui Executive Committee
Waikato-Tainui has announced that Rahui Papa is the new Chairman of its executive committee Te Arataura.
Mr Papa was today elected by a majority of Te Arataura members during a regular board meeting. He replaces incumbent Chairman, Tom Roa, who has held the position since 2011.
Mr Papa is a noted orator and expert in Tainui oral history. He has served on the tribe’s governing body, Te Kauhanganui, since its inception and is currently serving his fourth term on Te Arataura. He is a former Director of Tainui Group Holdings, chairs the Tainui Teachers Association and the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka board and is co-Chairman of the Ngaati Korokii Kahukura Trust.
Mr Papa said his appointment as Chairman was an honour and he acknowledged the responsibility he now held to provide stable, strategic and forward focused leadership. He was committed to creating a governance environment that was open-minded, empowering, respectful and decisive, and which would support the tribe’s aspirations for development and prosperity.
“I thank Tom for his conscientious stewardship of Te Arataura and I look forward to a continued inclusive-based approach going forward that will see tangible outcomes for our people and a strengthening of relationships across the board,” said Mr Papa.
Mr Papa assumes his role as Chairman effective immediately. Mr Roa remains on Te Arataura as a member and remains in his role as negotiator on behalf of Waikato-Tainui.
Tipa Mahuta has also been elected as Deputy Chairperson, replacing Hemi Rau in that role. Mr Rau also remains on Te Arataura.
