The recent announcement of a new advisory service being made available to Cantabrians planning on rebuilding or renovating their quake damaged homes is seen as an encouraging step forward in promoting home design that accommodates all people. Commenting on the announcement on Tuesday, Disability Issues Minister Tariana Turia said “Homes that are built according to Universal or Lifetime design principles are homes that are easy to live in and to visit.”
Lifetime Design Ltd promotes the Lifemark, an independent seal of approval awarded to homes that include design criteria that enable adaptable, accessible and safe home design, has been working extensively in the Canterbury region with designers, architects, builders and developers to educate and encourage Lifemark Accreditation – widening the pool of industry professionals who can be trusted to deliver a proven standard in accessible house design. “We’re delighted to see the Government is committed to enabling options for all people to ‘age in place’, remaining in their own homes and own communities for as long as they wish” said Lifemark General Manager Andrew Olsen.
“Anything that means information on future proofing our housing for all people, whether young, old or people with disabilities, has to be a good thing,” explains Andrew, “we’ve gone as far as developing an interactive resource that breaks down some of the misconceptions around ‘accessible or universal design’, our interactive Homeowner’s guide showcases how low cost innovative design can both look good and meet the functional needs of everyday family life.”
“We have an opportunity in Christchurch to lead the world in adaptable and accessible housing and the introduction of advisory services in addition to the work that Lifemark has done and is continuing to do in the housing sector will surely help us build a world class accessible city.”
