Lambton Quay Losing Dominance in Pedestrian Count
The traditional dominance of Lambton Quay in Wellington pedestrian numbers is on the decline, with two non-Lambton locations reaching the top ten in 2012’s Property Institute Pedestrian Count.
“The top ten in the 2011 count were exclusively Lambton Quay locations, so it is interesting to see these two appear” said Gerard Glynn, Chair of the Institute’s Wellington Branch.
The two locations to feature outside of Lambton Quay were Sunglass Hut at 8 – 14 Willis St and Area 51 at 79 Cuba Street.
“While these results may indicate a broadening of Wellington’s CBD, Lambton Quay isn’t going away anytime soon. It continues to hold all of the top five spots in the city, including number one at Farmers, at 206-218 Lambton Quay” said Mr Glynn.
A total of 63,192 pedestrians were counted during the 2012 count, though obviously many would have appeared in multiple count spots.
The count, conducted in conjunction with the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute of Valuers, took place on 13 November 2012 and covered 65 central Wellington locations. Samples were taken at each location by branch members at three different times throughout the day, for twenty minute periods. The count included any pedestrian which the counter thought to be over ten years old and a potential shopper.
