New Record Top Price at Karaka Festival Sale

Day 1 of New Zealand Bloodstock’s two-day Festival Sale was highlighted by a new top price for this session with the Swiss Ace colt at Lot 1149 fetching $125,000.

From the Hussonet mare Eclaircissement, Lot 1149 from Westbury Stud was purchased by Rogerson Bloodstock for $125,000.

Having a previous affiliation with the family, Rogerson was prepared to go beyond his budget to secure the colt out of a half-sister to multiple stakeswinner Illuminates (Strategic).

Record Festival Sale top Lot 1149 was purchased for $125,000 by Rogerson Bloodstock
“I trained Illuminates and she was a good horse,” commented Rogerson.

“I thought he was the nicest horse here today but I didn’t think I would have to go that high for him.”

The colt was the second highlight provided this week by the freshman sire Swiss Ace (Secret Savings), who also provided the top price on the final day of the Select Sale when Tony Pike went to $160,000 for the colt at Lot 1007. The previous top price at the Festival Sale was $110,000 paid for the Elusive City colt at Lot 1397 in 2010.

Westbury Stud’s resident sire Swiss Ace took top honours for the day with four entries sold at an average of $38,875. Next was the Cambridge Stud sire Keeper with three colts and a filly sold for an average of $23,250 with a top price of $32,000 for Lot 1214.

With Westbury Stud fielding three of the top five prices for the day, the stud ended the day as the leading vendor by both aggregate and average at $303,000 and $27,545 respectively with 11 yearlings sold. Westbury has a further 25 entries catalogued tomorrow by the likes of Swiss Ace, Captain Rio, Postponed, Cecconi, Red Giant, Iffraaj, Librettist and Tavistock.

With the biggest draft at Karaka 2013 with 81 lots entered for sale, Westbury has sold 51 for $3,655,500 so far this week, at a combined average of $71,676 across the three sales sessions. The Stud’s top price was $375,000 paid for its Fastnet Rock filly at Lot 333 by NZB as agent for a local owner on Day 2 of the Premier Sale.

With 440 lots catalogued at this year’s Festival Sale compared with just 308 in 2012, so far 131 have sold for $1,586,950 at an average of $12,114 and clearance rate of 67%. A further 212 yearlings have been catalogued for the final day of the Festival Sale tomorrow.

Following the trend at the Select Sale, it was the local buyers who have been the most active at this session, accounting for 85% of today’s turnover on 122 horses.

Buying for a range of owners, Graeme Rogerson’s solo purchase today joined a list of 15 yearlings purchased by him at the Premier (7) & Select (8) Sales earlier in the week, including top price of $200,000 paid for the Captain Rio colt at Lot 165 of Premier.

The leading buyer by numbers for the day was Wanganui trainer Kevin Myers with seven yearlings purchased for $66,800 at an average of $9,543. He paid a top price of $23,000 for Ardsley Stud’s Elusive City colt at Lot 1237.

After six days of selling at Karaka 2013, total takings are currently $69,374,450 for 863 yearlings sold. This includes 10 yearlings that have found new homes since the close of selling at the Premier and Select Sales earlier in the week.To view the remaining Passed Lots during this week click here: Premier Sale, Select Sale, Festival Sale.

The final day of Karaka 2013 will take place tomorrow with Lots 1281 to 1492 from 11am. All lots will be streamed live online at www.nzb.co.nz.
