January New Vehicle Sales Remain Strong

Building on last year’s exceptional growth of 19%, January new vehicle registrations of 9,293 were up 7% (612 units) on January 2012. Commercial vehicles of 1,908 were up 726 units (61.4%) on January 2012; however this number was influenced by shortages of stock of utility vehicles due to the flooding in Thailand late 2011. Passenger car registrations of 7,385 were down 114 units (1.5%) on January 2012 (7,499).

Mr Kerr, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association said, “This is a very encouraging result and builds on a very successful 2012. For commercial vehicles the monthly total of 1,908 was the highest monthly figure since 1982. Passenger car registrations of 7,385 were only the fourth time since 1975 the January monthly total has exceed 7,000 units (previous times were 1982, 2008 and 2012).”

Toyota was the market leader taking 20.8% of total registrations with 1,936 registrations (1,528 passenger cars and 408 commercials). Holden was second overall with passenger cars (908 units for 12.3%) with Hyundai third (685 units for 9.3%). In the commercial segment Ford was second with 285 registrations followed by Nissan with 228.

The top selling model for the month was the Toyota Corolla with 658 registrations, followed by the Holden Cruze with 367 and the Suzuki Swift 254. In the commercial segment the Toyota Hilux was the top selling model with 252 units, followed by the Nissan Navara with 220 and the Ford Ranger 217.

For the month the SUV segment remained the most popular segment with 26.9% of total registrations. This was followed by the small segment 22.2% (influenced by the number of Toyota Corolla and Holden Cruze registrations).
