Gisborne District Council is revising the layout of the intersection at Carnarvon Street and Anzac Street/Kahutia Street. It has caused confusion for many motorists, particularly with the change in the right hand rule this year.

The intersection layout was changed many years ago due to concerns about heavy vehicles using the road to go to the Watties plant in Customhouse Street. Traffic flows around town have changed since then and the construction of roundabouts on most major intersections has improved access to main roads.

The Give Way control at the intersection will be reversed, so that Carnarvon Street traffic will now give way to all traffic on Anzac Street and Kahutia Street. Temporary signage will be in place to alert motorists and road users of the change.

The traffic islands will be removed and the road resurfaced. While the work is being carried out, there will be some unsealed patches. Temporary traffic management will be in place which may cause some delays. This is to protect the safety of the public.

The work has now started and will be completed before Christmas.

Council thanks road users for their patience.
