Wellington, 7 December 2012.
The first “super premium” honey mead wine has been launched on the New Zealand market. It is tagged “premium reserve”, and aged with toasted French oak, and wone best in class at the recent national Fruit Wine Competition. Appropriately named “Excaliber”, the back label describes it as “the Holy Grail of honey mead wine.” It is the latest addition to the Bemrose range of mead wine and liqueurs, produced by Wildfern NZ, which also produces premium cocktail liqueurs.
Excaliber is made from a blend of native honeys, including Manuka honey: the rest are secret. “The quality comes from the exacting standard of balance with which we have selected honeys to give depth and richness with spice, lightness, and vanilla undertones: it is made the way you might make a blended red wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, and a touch of Pinot Meuniere”, explains owner and winemaker, Mark Atkin.
The Bemrose range has been the leading range of mead in NZ for some 15 years, both in quality and product range. Bemrose mead was the first in NZ to win a gold medal (several by now) and best white wine trophy. The range, and gold medals, began with the first sparkling mead in NZ, called Moonlight Gold. Its flagship product Wintermede, is recognized as the best mead available, (until Excaliber).
Excaliber also sports a new upmarket label. “We are really pleased with this stunning new label. We morphed the contemporary Wildfern label, from our Wildfern cocktail liqueur range, with the traditional style of our Bemrose mead label”, says Mark Atkin.
We are fortunate to have crossed paths with our contract designer some years ago – Jason Reid of Visual Identity. His design work is always of the highest standard.
Excaliber is available in Honey Centres around NZ, or via Wildfern’s website www.wildfern.co.nz.
