Proper Crisps packs a new crunch
A Nelson artisan potato crisp company, with a passion for hand crafted goodness, has an exciting new flavour to add to its award-winning Marlborough Sea Salt.
Proper Crisps produces the only handmade potato crisps in Australasia, using the finest Agria potatoes from Canterbury, Marlborough sea salt and top quality Sunflower oil.
The philosophy at Proper Crisps is all about keeping it simple – producing “truly outstanding” crisps, made the traditional way. That means no additives, artificial preservatives, colours or flavours. When you’re eating Proper Crisps, you’re eating all natural.
The delicious new flavour, Rosemary & Thyme, with its natural herb aromas, is now in store and is set to tantalise taste buds across the country.
The New Zealand grown herbs are hand crushed and sprinkled on the crisps during production. Not only is it all natural, there are health benefits too. Rosemary can support digestive health and a healthy immune system while Thyme is said to have antioxidant properties.
Founded four years ago, the Nelson company’s philosophy has never wavered. With new owners, Ned and Mina Smith taking over the reins in 2011, the attention to detail remains. The potatoes are hand selected, sorted, peeled and hand stirred to produce the finest quality crisps with the best flavour.
In keeping with the company’s passion for quality, the Sunflower oil used is of the finest quality and is high in Oleic acid, a mono unsaturated Omega-9, a fatty acid that also has amazing benefits including targeting cholesterol levels.
The crisps are made in small batches. Each batch of crisps is spun in a specially designed “centrifuge”, the only machine of its kind in Australasia, to ensure the crisps are less oily and taste better.
Each batch of crisps is hand stirred by a team member, with their name stamped on each pack, so that customers can see who made their bag and when.
The couple is careful about waste too. At the factory, all the used oil is recycled and used to run the delivery truck.
So how did they come up with the new flavour? Ned, a former chef, and his wife Mina, had been experimenting with new flavours and Mina discovered that the herbs Rosemary and Thyme, from their garden, made a winning combination.
And they’re not about to stop there, with more flavours on the way, that are sure to satisfy any crisp connoisseur.
Proper Crisps are gluten free, GMO free and suitable for vegetarians.
Proper Crisps are now available at selected New World and Fresh Choice supermarkets nationwide as well as select stores such as Farro Fresh, Nosh, Moore Wilson, delis, wine stores and green grocers.
RRP $4.69 per 150 g bag with 40g bags soon to follow.
