Pure Oil New Zealand Limited is pleased to announce its purchase of the Agricultural Division of Biodiesel New Zealand Limited. This includes: oil seed rape crop production, the oil extraction facility at Rolleston and the marketing of the resultant products (rape seed oil and rape seed meal).
Pure Oil NZ is owned by Midlands Seed, Southern Packers, Roger Lasham (Agronomist) and Nick Murney (Manager). This group of shareholders bring a wide range of skills and expertise to strengthen the current business model and will ensure the new business is able to reach its full potential.
Brassica napus, commonly known as oilseed rape (“OSR”), is a bright yellow-flowering member of the brassicaceae family (the mustard or cabbage family of plants). Arable farmers from Southland to Manawatu grow the crop on a forward contract basis for the business. OSR is mainly planted in autumn however spring planted varieties are also available. All existing OSR contracts with Growers have been taken over by Pure Oil NZ as part of the business purchase.
The future of OSR as a crop option in New Zealand looks as bright as its yellow flower. The crop is now into its fourth season in New Zealand and the industry is now seeing the benefits that OSR brings as a break-crop. With improved yields, early harvest, crop moved directly off farm, extended disease break, aid to good grass weed management in the rotation, ability to sign-up large contracted areas, as well as favourable payment terms, the benefits are numerous. Commonly known as the best break crop for wheat, with the potential to increase yields in the whole rotation, it represents an excellent choice for farmers wishing to make positive changes to increase their bottom line.
Pure Oil NZ is committed to assisting growers to increase returns and intends to invest in improving yield with additional research and development activities. In addition, there will be the provision of on-going technical agronomy support from an agronomist with over 20 years’ experience with the crop.
The manufacturing process performed at the Rolleston facility involves extracting the oil from the seed via a Cold Pressing process. This is a pure process, ensuring a resultant high quality product, produced without the use of solvents. The end result is premium culinary oil that is sold into the New Zealand food industry. The meal is a high protein high energy animal feed supplement used in the pork and dairy sectors.
