Foss goes missing over NZ On Air

Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss has either displayed his incompetence or was deliberately attempting to mislead the House when he ducked questions on the growing crisis involving NZ On Air in the House today, Labour’s Broadcasting spokesperson Clare Curran says.

“A series of emails and reports tabled today clearly show the Minister was advised in January, by both the NZ On Air chair and MediaWorks, of the controversy surrounding John Key’s electorate secretary Stephen McElrea who sits on the board.

“This is despite the fact that Mr Foss claimed earlier this month that he had received no reports or advice about the potential conflict of interest regarding Mr McElrea’s position,” Clare Curran said.

“The documents, released under the Official Information Act, include a two page report from the board chair on the issue, sent directly to the Minister’s office.

“As is becoming typical of Government ministers Craig Foss had questions directed to him answered by a senior colleague today. It’s the second time that has happened.

“He is either inept in running his Ministry, or is deliberately misleading the House by not owning up to having seen correspondence and reports his office had received.

“Either way, it’s not a good look for the Government,” Clare Curran said.
