November 1st
The tributary rivers of Southland’s
major lakes open for the first time this season on November
1st, a date that has long been marked on many of our
anglers’ calendars. Consistent recent rainfall will see
these rivers at, or slightly above normal flows. Good
numbers of trout, rainbows in particular, are expected to be
present as a result.
There are early reports of mouse
eating trout being taken around the lake shores. Anglers
should be prepared for significantly larger fish in the
western tributaries and adjust their line strengths
accordingly.
This season Fish and Game Southland is
trialling a web-based booking system for the Ettrick Burn,
Lake Te Anau. The Ettrick lies within the Takahe Special
Area of the Murchison Mountains and entry for anglers is by
a special licence only. These are available via the Fish and
Game website www.fishandgame.org.nz.
Anglers should
be reminded that Clean Gear Certificates are required for
most rivers within Fiordland National Park. This system has
successfully kept rivers clear of didymo and this
requirement is strictly
enforced.
