Labour thanks Auckland Harbour Bridge Workers

Labour MP Darien Fenton today hosted the event at Stokes Point memorial in Northcote to pay tribute to the workers of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, which was attended by original and present workers, unions and local community members.

Darien Fenton says she was motivated to organise the tribute after it became obvious that there was not likely to be any recognition of the workers on the 50th anniversary of the Harbour Bridge.

After a short service to commemorate the workers who died, Darien Fenton welcomed those attending and spoke of the important job workers did and how their work needed to be recognised.

“Since the event was first advertised, I have been contacted by many bridge workers and their families,” says Ms Fenton.

“All have had fascinating stories to tell about their time working to build or maintain the Harbour Bridge and I’m pleased the event provided some recognition for those workers.

Many workers had not seen each other in decades and there were stories, photos and old friendships shared at the event.

After the formalities, Darien Fenton presented two cakes : one to those who came to remember past workers and one for current workers –to wish them all 50th anniversary greetings.

“It was a privilege to host this event and I was proud to do it on behalf of Labour,” says Darien Fenton.
