Delay In Waipara Wine Village & Day Spa Project

The multi-million dollar Waipara Wine Village & Day Spa project has been delayed, given the uncertainty in the current economic environment.

Latitude Group’s Director Ken Wimsett says it’s prudent for his company to delay the next stage of the tourism development due to the downturn in the market.

“We are still totally committed to this project and it’s important to emphasise that the development is on hold until sales reach an appropriate level. We are continuing our sales programme and we are confident of an improvement in the market in the near future.”

The Waipara Wine Village & Day Spa will become part of the internationally recognised Accor Group’s prestigious Grand Mecure Collection. The luxury hotel will comprise 132 rooms, made up of a combination of hotel suites and two and three bedroom villas. Full conference facilities, a wine bar and restaurant, international alehouse, wine-tasting facilities and a luxury day spa will establish the

Grand Mecure complex as one of New Zealand’s leading holiday resorts. It will also include a Greg Turner designed golf course.

Ken Wimsett says the company has already invested a significant amount of capital in the project and is committed to seeing this project through to completion.

“Taking into account the capital investment and the work done to date, we have already invested nearly $10million in the project. We are not about to walk away from this and are committed to seeing this development through to fruition.”

Latitude Group will continue to play an active part in the local community and Ken Wimsett says the company feels very much at home in the Hurunui district.

“I want to reassure everyone we will continue to support a community that we feel very much a part of. We will be supporting it through such initiatives as sponsorship of the Waipara Wine and Food Festival in February, reinforcing our commitment to the project and the growth of tourism within the area.”

Ken Wimsett says Latitude Group is still committed to its developments in Canterbury, with its A-grade office tower development, Club Tower, nearing completion.
