Press Release: Auckland-based Inter-country Recruitment Company Achieves Second Place on Deloitte Fast 50 List

Working In, an Auckland-based company, is number 2 on the Deloitte Fast 50 list of fast-growing New Zealand companies.

At the awards ceremony last night the company was also presented with the awards for ‘Fastest Growing Business Services Company’ and ‘Fastest Growing Exporter – Auckland and Upper North Island’.

Working In’s initial mandate was to bring home returning Kiwis and was started in 1998 in the central London flat of CEOs Hayley Roberts and Scott Mathieson.

At that time, Working In produced just a single magazine, profiling New Zealand businesses looking to recruit New Zealanders returning after their OE. Now, the company runs more than 20 international recruitment expos in the UK and South Africa, New Zealand’s largest employment website for skilled migrants, and publishes four magazines a year.

“When we started the company,” says Ms Roberts, “we were targeting it at Kiwi expats who were looking to move back home. But we found that there were lots of Brits looking to migrate to New Zealand who were using our magazine too, so we altered the business to suit the needs of migrants.”

Working In runs the Opportunities New Zealand Expo held in the UK that attracts 6000-8000 would-be migrants four times a year. The focus of the expo is to put skilled people in touch with New Zealand’s top employers.

New Zealand is not the only destination British migrants consider when looking to move from the UK, and Working In also runs large events for Canada and Australia.

Events for New Zealand and other countries are also run in South Africa. “With the political situation in South Africa, migration has skyrocketed. Especially in areas like engineering, we see highly qualified people who are really keen to move,” says Ms Roberts. “The demand really has been unprecedented. One of our expos earlier in the year had 11,000 people through the doors over two days.”

Working In recently launched a new expo to be held in the UK in 2009 – Opportunities Dubai. “Dubai is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world and there is a huge demand for skilled people. It has a slightly different focus because people tend to move to New Zealand, Australia and Canada for the lifestyle, whereas Dubai is attracting people who want a few years in a very different culture while earning money,” says Ms Roberts.

“We are very pleased to have got to 2nd place in the Deloitte list. It’s been hard work but we’ve got a great team and we love what we do. It’s a real feather in our cap,” says Ms Roberts.
